Alfons Walde
Alfons Walde enrolled at the Vienna Polytechnic in 1910 to study architecture but interrupted his studies to enlist as a volunteer in 1914. He moved in the same artistic circles as Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918) and Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918). Both artists had a formative influence on his early work. He found an important patron in the architect Robert Örley (1867 – 1945). Exhibitions of his work were staged in Innsbruck and Vienna. Alpine landscapes figured strongly in his work, particularly the mountain scenery of the Tyrol. His virtuosity in this genre brought him numerous first prizes. In 1925 he exhibited work at the Biennale Romana. In 1927 he was commissioned to design the poster for the Hahnenkammbahn in the Kitzbühel Alps. In 1928 he was awarded first prize in the competition for the design of the main concourse at Innsbruck Central Station. In 1929 he built a house for himself on the Hahnenkamm. He was married three times – in 1925, in 1930 and in 1940. He was appointed a professor in 1956 in recognition of his lifetime artistic achievement.
