Edward Cucuel
Edward Cucuel studied at the Academy of Art in his home city when he was just 14 years old. He quickly went on to become an illustrator for The Examiner newspaper. When he was just 17 he went to Paris, studying at the Académie Julian, the Académie Colarossi, and at the Académie of Beaux-Arts. In 1896 he returned to San Francisco and again worked as an illustrator. There followed study trips through France and Italy. In 1907 in Munich, he joined the artist group Scholle and met Leo Putz, who gave him lessons in plein-air painting. Exhibitions followed, with the Secession, and from 1912 he also exhibited in Paris where he became a member of the Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts and of the Salons d’Automne. He was awarded the silver medal at the 1915 World Exhibition, in San Francisco, for his painting 'Winter Sun'. Between 1914 and 1918 he lived and worked at Lake Ammersee, outside Munich. Later, he set up studios in both Munich and Starnberg. From 1928 to 1934 he worked between Starnberg and New York. With the outbreak of the Second World War he moved to Pasadena, where he remained until his death in 1954.
