Franz von Stuck
Franz von Stuck was born in Tettenweis near Passau in Lower Bavaria in 1863. He died in Munich in 1928. He studied at the School of Applied Arts in Munich from 1878 to 1881 under Ferdinand Barth (1842-92), continuing his studies at the Munich Academy under Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger (1829-95) and Ludwig von Löfftz (1845-1910). He contributed illustrations to the magazines Fliegende Blätter and Jugend. He was a founding member of the Munich Secession in 1892. In 1893 he was named professor and in 1895 at the early age of thirty-two was appointed a professor at the Munich Academy. He was awarded the title of Ritter in 1906. In the years around 1900 he shared the princely lifestyle and grand manner of Franz von Lenbach (1836-1904) – a veritable ‘prince of artists’. He was also active as an architect, sculptor and printmaker. Today he is regarded as one of the leading representatives of Art Nouveau in the Symbolist vein.
