Gabriele Münter
Gabriele Münter's art education began with her 1897 visit to the School for Women's Art (Damenkunstschule) in Düsseldorf. From 1901, she studied at the school of painting at the Women Artists' Society in Munich ( Künstlerinnen-Verein) and subsequently (1902) took various courses at the 'Phalanx' School, which was run by Wassily Kandinsky. In 1903 she and Kandinsky were engaged to be married. Subsequently there were joint trips to France, Italy, Tunisia and Holland. Between 1908 and 1909 the pair initially lived in Munich and then at Münter's house in the town of Murnau. She was the co-founder of the Neuen Künstlervereinigung München (New Artists' Association Munich), remaining a member until 1911. After this she joined the artist group known as The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter), formed in 1911. In 1914 Münter and Kandinsky separated. Several years of travels then took her to Copenhagen and Stockholm. From 1920 she shifted her residence between Cologne, Munich and Murnau, and from 1925 also lived in Berlin. In 1931 Münter finally settled in Murnau with Johannes Eichner, her second life-partner.
