Jeanne Mammen
Jeanne Mammen was born in Berlin in 1890. She died in 1976. In 1895 the Mammen family moved to Paris, where she took up studies in 1906 at the Académie Julian, a private art school. She enrolled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1908, completing her studies in 1911. From 1911 to 1912 she attended the Scuola Libera Academica at the Villa Medici in Rome. She returned to Paris in 1912. She began to organize exhibitions privately in her own rooms and showed work at the Paris Salon des Indépendants. These early, symbolist watercolours were largely inspired by themes drawn from literature. She was forced to leave Paris in 1916 for political reasons and fled to Berlin. In 1919 she moved into a studio on the Kürfürstendamm. Her earliest film posters for the UFA – the famous film studios Universum Film AG – date from 1921. She also worked as a fashion designer for a large number of leading magazines and journals. An exhibition at Galerie Gurlitt in 1930 was her first major public success and her illustrations began to be enthusiastically received by the Berlin art world. She visited Russia in 1932. The change in the political climate brought about by the National Socialist seizure of power forced her to alter her stylistic approach and to adopt a form of abstraction.
