Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. He died in Mougins in the South of France in 1973. He trained at art schools in Corunna, Barcelona and Madrid. He first visited Paris in 1900. Between 1900 and 1904 he divided his time between Paris and Barcelona. These were the years of his Blue Period. In 1904 he moved to Paris. A brief phase in 1904-5 is known as his Rose Period. In 1906 he met Georges Braque (1882-1963) and Henri Matisse (1869-1954). The period 1907-9 is referred to as his African-influenced period. period. In 1907 he completed the pivotal work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, heralding Cubism. He spent the summer months of 1911-14 in Spain and the South of France working in close association with Braque, André Derain (1880-1954) and Juan Gris (1887-1927). His visit to Italy in 1917 was influential in his development of a form of monumental Neoclassicism which was evident in his work in the period 1920-4. In 1937 he painted his most famous work, Guernica, for the Spanish pavilion at the Paris Exposition Universelle. During the Occupation he lived in Paris. He moved to the South of France after the war,
dividing his time between Antibes, Vallauris (1947-55), Cannes (1955-8) and Vauvenargues near Aix-en-Provence (1958-61). From 1961 until his death in 1973 he lived in Mougins.
