André Brasilier was born into an artistic family in Saumur in 1929. He is the son of the painter Jacques Brasilier. André enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1949, studying painting under Maurice Brianchon (1899-1979). He began to exhibit in 1951. After completing his studies he spent three years – from 1954 to 1957 – in residence at the Villa Medici in Rome. A lengthy round-the-world trip followed. Demand for his work rapidly increased and his artistic achievement found wide recognition. In 1961 he and his wife moved to the Château de Loupeigne in Picardy. The Château was to become a key motif in his work. After 1960, there was a sharp interest in his work in Paris, New York and Tokyo. His international reputation rests on his oils, watercolours and a large body of lithographs. He also works in the medium of ceramics and ceramic painting. The appeal of his work is twofold: first, his successful melding of tonal clarity and brilliance and second, his delicate and sparing use of line. His preferred subjects are horses, circuses, cavalcades, flowers, music and images of his muse, his wife Chantal.
