Louis Marie de Schryver was born in Paris in 1862. He died in Neuilly in 1942. He was largely self-taught but later trained briefly under Philippe Rousseau (1816-87). Hugely talented, he exhibited his first works at the Paris Salon at the age of thirteen. At the age of seventeen he was awarded a bronze medal at the Sydney World’s Fair. Further prizes followed – in 1891 at the Paris Salon and in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle. Recurrent motifs in his oeuvre are Parisian street scenes bustling with life, spontaneity and elegance. Virtuoso in their execution, they were highly praised and greatly sought after at home and abroad. De Schryver was also active as a portraitist and costume painter. He became a member of the Sociéte des Artistes Français in 1888. In 1919-25 he visited the Rhineland on an extended study trip. He moved to Neuilly in 1891 and died there at the age of eighty.
