Oskar Moll was born in Brieg near Breslau in 1885. He died in 1947. He studied under Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) and moved to Paris in 1907 to continue his studies. He attended the newly established Académie Matisse and was closely associated with the legendary circle of artists who frequented the Café du Dôme in Montparnasse. His early work was influenced by Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). Appointed a professor at the Breslau Academy in 1918, he became its director in 1926. He later moved to Berlin. In 1937 his work was branded degenerate and he was forbidden to exhibit. Withdrawing from public and artistic life to his lakeside house in Halensee, he concentrated on his preferred genres – landscape and still-life painting. He also turned increasingly to images of the nude. He died at the age of seventy-two in Berlin.
